It’s amazing the mental gymnastics that parts of the political right can go to to reinvent themselves, put the blame on their opponents and then be able look in the mirror and tell themselves “we were always like this, never like that!” As if the realisation of any similarity with a monster makes one feel like the monster, or perhaps reveals too much that is similar for one’s comfort or political convenience. Take the conservative United Australia Party (UAP) of the 1930s. Staunchly anti-union
